Three Notes

  • I know I didn't mention the police. I get the feeling that the involvement of the police, in what (I think) should have been the US Secret Service's "inner perimeter", is possibly designed to muddy the waters—in order to get everyone talking about confusion and miscommunication between the security forces—whereas what should remain at the forefront of our minds is the intrinsic implausibility of such "security" arrangements in the first place. (But I may be wrong.)

  • These days it seems there's a great deal of social pressure to preface any statement of opinion on contentious matters with some kind of disclaimer, such as "I'm not anti-vax, but...", or "I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but..." (even though everyone is a conspiracy theorist), or "I'm not a climate denier, but...". So, as I'm a bit stubborn by nature, I'm not going to give in to that pressure and say, "I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool Trump supporter, but...", OK? And if anyone thinks that I've just contradicted myself by mentioning that phrase, I'll leave you to ponder the deep paradox at your leisure.

  • I include the above paragraph, with its possibly tantalising paradox, because I was once on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse on the erstwhile Twitter when I foolishly wrote something that just happened to coincide with the opinion of Donald Trump. (I don't even remember what it was about now.) Instead of checking if I was an American, or a Republican, or if I had a history of repeating Trumpian slogans, a whole bunch of echo-chamberly anti-Trump types accused me of being a MAGA enthusiast whose deplorable opinions should forever be erased from the face of the politically "centrist" Earth. Anyway, I'm English, and I voted for The Official Monster Raving Loony Party in 2023, but I guess they wouldn't understand that either.
